The practical life montessori lesson activities correspond to the psychical principle of “liberty of movement.” Much of this work is suitable for little children, who must “exercise themselves in order to learn to coordinate their movements.

For this it will be sufficient to prepare “a suitable environment,” just as we should place the branch of a tree in an aviary, and then to leave the children to follow their instincts of activity and imitation.

The surrounding objects should be proportioned to the size and strength of the child: light furniture that he can carry about; low dressers within reach of his arms; locks that he can easily manipulate; chests that run on castors; light doors that he can open and shut readily; clothes-pegs fixed on the walls at a height convenient for him; brushes his little hand can grasp; pieces of soap that can lie in the hollow of such a hand; basins so small that the child is strong enough to empty them; brooms with short, smooth, light handles; clothes he can easily put on and take off himself; these are surroundings which invite activity, and among which the child will gradually perfect his movements without fatigue, acquiring human grace and dexterity, just as the little kitten acquires its graceful movement and feline dexterity solely under the guidance of instinct.

The field thus opened to the free activity of the child will enable him to exercise himself and to form himself as a person. It is not movement for its own sake that he will derive from these exercises, but a powerful co-efficient in the complex formation of his personality. His social sentiments in the relations he forms with other free and active children, his collaborators in a kind of household designed to protect and aid their development; the sense of dignity acquired by the child who learns to satisfy himself in surroundings he himself preserves and dominates–these are the co-efficients of humanity which accompany “liberty of movement.”

From his consciousness of this development of his personality the child derives the impulse to persist in these tasks, the industry to perform them, the intelligent joy he shows in their completion. In such an environment he undoubtedly _works himself_ and fortifies his spiritual being, just as when his body is bathed in fresh air and his limbs move freely in the meadows, he works at the growth of his physical organism and strengthens it.

Between the ages of birth to four-and-a-half, children are in a sensitive period for refining their senses. Children at this age are capable of learning to discern hundreds of qualities of the things around them as well as absorb information about things, such as learning their names.

One can take advantage of this particular interest that is unique to this age group. Introducing interesting things with their names through the “Three Period Lesson” harnesses the power of association within the subconscious Continue reading »

Montessori HelperINTRODUCTION TO ART.

“Art belongs to the whole world and the barriers of nationality vanish before it”

This quotation by Goethe sums up the fact that art is a gift to all human beings. Art transcends time and place. It is through the study of art and artifacts of ancient civilization, indeed since the time of early cave man, that we can understand and visualise their way of life and their emotional thoughts and feelings.

When we study art we perceive it on many levels, not only looking or hearing but seeing and listening, and above all, feelings. Art is a powerful form of communication as it reaches beyond the particular cultural era of its creation – recreating emotional responses in people of diverse cultures and generations.

The creation of a piece of art encompasses psychological and physiological manifestations. The mind conceives an idea and the hand finds some outward form of expression for that idea.

This expression in outward form can find a great variety of outlets such as in the visual arts, music, poetry, all literary forms, inventions and everyday functional objects.

CREATIVITY IN RELATION TO THE Montessori METHOD.

To create means to take what is known and understood and to form from that something new. The child’s task is to form himself. From the experiences and opportunities he receives from his environment, he creates for himself his own faculties of will, intellect, co-ordination and ultimately his whole personality – the adult he will be. Thus the child’s creative potential goes far beyond the usually accepted very limited concept of art of children.

The role of the adult in the Montessori classroom is to respect the creative nature and creative powers of the child and to prepare an environment to bring this potentiality to its fullest.

Art is an outward expression of an inner development and the Montessori programme encompasses various preparatory exercises to guide this inner development and encourages the outward expression to take a variety of forms.

PREPARATION OF THE MIND.

For a child to be creative he needs information in all areas of learning. The cultural curriculum will augment the child’s mind with rich experiences and information of all branches of knowledge.

The adult’s responsibility is to help and guide the child in building his intellect. Through the cultural activities facts are presented in clear, interesting and exciting ways. The child’s mind is not confused with fantasy.

REFINEMENT OF THE SENSES.

To express outwardly an idea in the mind requires acute powers of observation. The child’s senses are refined by exploration, experience and repetition of the exercises and activities designed around the sensorial material.

The child is also able to perceive the nuances of the qualities of colour, texture, shape, and form essential for the successful execution of creative piece of art.

The Sensitive Period for the refinement of the senses is at its height between the ages of 2 ½ to 5 years. It is during this time that the various sensorial materials are introduced to the child. It thus makes optimum use of the special psychological powers, which make it possible for the child to abstract the essence of the materials more easily and more perfectly than would be the case at any other stage of development.

PREPARATION OF THE HAND.

The hand serves as an instrument of the mind and must be prepared in order that it can make visible in creative form what the mind wishes to express.

The Practical Life activities are designed to refine the child’s hand and eye co-ordination. There are motives for control built into the activities and the child practices and repeats until the hand obeys the mind e.g. pouring without spilling.

These activities are an indirect preparation for the hand in respect of art much in the same way as they are an indirect preparation for writing.

PREPARATION FOR ORDER.

A sequential orderly way of carrying out tasks and thus learning a skill gives the child a pattern for orderly thinking and functioning. The practical life activities have a logical beginning, middle and end. The child acquires a synthesis of order which leads to concentration and development of the will, both very important attributes for self – expression through art.

CREATIVITY IN THE Montessori CLASS.

The creative use of language is encouraged from very early on e.g. discussions, conversations, writing own stories etc. the children are expose to the beauty of language in the form of poetry, stories, picturesque vocabulary in all cultural areas. Thus the children are able to express themselves beautifully because of the exposure they have received in the environment.

When the children take a piece of sensorial material and re-arrange it in a new way, observing a pattern that is different, they are creating. They have already absorbed the essence of the materials concerned. Their experimentation adds further understanding and further application.

Music is an integral part of the Montessori curriculum. The children are encouraged to sing, move rhythmically, learn to play the bells to refine their sense of pitch. They also learn notation. This is all preparation for composition, which is the natural point of arrival. The children are encouraged and are able to create their own music.

In order for a child to come to know and appreciate visual art, it must be part of his everyday environment. With the aid of the power of the Absorbent Mind the child absorbs aesthetically from the environment. The home environment should contain art so that the child is exposed to the beauty and wonder of thought expressed through art from his earliest days. As the Absorbent Mind also absorbs attitudes, the attitudes of the persons in the child’s environment towards the beauties of art will become part of the subconscious of the child to develop later as part of his total personality.

The visual arts have a place in the Montessori curriculum as an important area of learning. Children’s work as well as that of adults should adorn homes, school and public places. It is important that the adults respect the art of the child – it is an expression of himself and to give a negative response would be to damage the child’s self – image.

Montessori Helper

It is a well known fact that the vast majority of children learn the alphabet by rote.

In other words they simply repeat the letters and learn them by repetition.

The ABC song is probably the best example of this misguided conventional wisdom.

The same applies to how most children learn the numbers 1 – 10.

Since the alphabet and the number system are the most fundamental building blocks to all future language and mathematical learning in a child’s life… why is it that we do not allow the child to learn it in a way that aids comprehension, not just memorisation by repetition.

The video clip above is a simple example of how concepts of number are literally represented in Montessori by concrete objects like the “red rods”

In a “concrete” way where they will literally understand the difference between “1” and “2”, or “a” and “b”.

Think about it, how is a child meant to comprehend what “2” actually means when all they have heard is someone say “2” and they have simply repeated it, much to the satisfaction of the doting parent or teacher.  It is this very logic that is often the catalyst for “blocks” and learning difficulties with Maths and other subject areas in later years.

By contrast, one of the benefits of using the Montessori Method, for teaching the alphabet and numbers, is because she stresses how important it is to “internalise” a concrete concept first before building on that.

As a foundation for writing and arithmetic a child needs to learn from concrete “sensory” experiences through the sensorial and practical life lesson activities.

Through Sensorial activities which create this foundation a child can begin to learn the process of reading and writing (using the phonetic or “sounded” alphabet) and the process of counting starting the sandpaper letters and the large number rods

Once these processes are established via the Montessori Method, the child is then open to an unlimited field for future development.

The video clip above is a simple example of word formation using the sandpaper letters and the phonetic alphabet.

What the Montessori Method does therefore is to introduce the child to “abstract” concepts through the a process of “concrete” cognition

By contrast, in traditional methods (conventional wisdom) we attempt to teach abstract concepts not yet grounded by relevant concrete experiences, and these “concrete” experiences and the progression of them into the “abstract” are an absolutely vital foundation to enable a child to progress to abstract learning in the first instance.

With the advent of abstract tools like computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones, the potential for “premature abstraction” is much higher than before and so we need to be especially careful when using apps and interactive tools.   Not to say that all modern aids like these are inherently evil, but it is important to understand the principles of the Montessori Method first before incorporating these tools into learning.

Similar to building a sturdy house, by applying the Montessori Method in Maths, we establish a firm foundation at a concrete level first, to prevent the house from being structurally weak over time, even if the house appears all in order from the outside.
