  1. Assist the infant to fetch a work mat and place it on the floor.
  2. Assist the infant to fetch the activity tray from the Montessori Cabinet
  3. Sit on opposite side of the mat to the infant
  4. Remove a handful of cereal from the box and place it in a small bowl on the matt next to the infant.
  5. Hold up a skewer stick in the infant’s natural line of vision and pause momentarily when you have the child’s attention, then place a single loop onto the stick.
  6. Now hold the skewer in front of the infant and allow them to follow your example.

The Montessori Method is also a philosophy. As a parent it is important to understand that everything we do with our children, how we interact with them and the environment they blossom within are key elements to this philosophy.

Although many of the lessons and presentations are step-by-step, the overall methodology is not necessarily sequential. We need to provide the tools and environment that are always available to the child in order for them to have sufficient freedom of movement and access to materials and equipment in order to feed their “absorbent minds”.

If you have read Montessori’s Own Handbook (which you would have received when signing up as a Free Member at MontessoriHelper.com) you will notice she refers to the “prepared environment.”

This in essence is the preparation of an environment that is a vital part of her method. We recommend you read this book if you have not done so already.

Now, their are Montessori Schools that we can go to which will generally provide the Montessori Environment required, but many parents want to provide the environment at home. We will help you to achieve this, all you need to do is keep reading this article. Please note that the suggestions we give are just that, they are not prescriptive and as a parent you can apply some initiative to find what works best for you. Once you understand the reasons behind our examples though, perhaps that will help you to make the choices you would think are best.

The key thing we propose is that your home environment be centred around the child. Most parents have a home in which the child’s environment is centred around adults. This is common convention and much of the items we buy for children are in themselves restrictive of movement because they give adults more control over children. A good example of this is the conventional “playpen”.

The child may seem happy, but as we mentioned above, by using this approach we are merely fitting the child into our adult environment and at the same time restricting their movement.

What we should be looking to do is redesign our (adult) environment to fit with the child.

Although this is a short statement, think on it for a while.

Is it not common sense that a child will be more stimulated if they have more space to explore and learn ?

The reality is that this is not generally the prevailing approach of most parents, simply because we live in a time poor world where controlling our environment saves time, and the proliferation of products for infants makes it easier to go down this path. In many instances we also just don’t know any better, perhaps based on the fact that approaches like these are so common place….our parents did it, our friends do it, so it must be fine.

Here is an example of how we have prepared our home Montessori Environment.  The first thing you will notice is that we have extended the child’s environment into the adult environment, thereby allowing significantly greater freedom of movement.

We have also included the following items :

– A Montessori Cabinet with activities ready for the child’s use.  Although you would not necessarily use exactly the same cabinet, it is important that the items are all visible and available at the child’s line of site.

– A large coffee table with drawers that the child can open and close at will.  This is optional. We have used it as part of the child’s environment to aid gross motor skills and to some extent a sense of “mastery” of the environment from the child’s perspective.  Their is nothing within the environment that cannot be handled or explored by the child.

– A large work environment where the child can work with the items from the cabinet.

– “Baby proofing” which is just common sense

We suggest that if you simply follow a similar approach to setting up your home environment and think about both space and access to Montessori Activities that you will have made a good start towards creating your own Montessori home environment.

Although the environment we have set up is in our main living room, this can be established in any room in the house, the key is that the child has easy access to the environment.  In our example we have chosen the living room because of the improved social interaction with the family and increased access it allows.

In a follow up article we will go into more detail as to the activities we would include for the age groups of birth to three and three to six, as well as further detail around the activities (also available from montessorihelper.com) and how we would present them within the home.

To show the child how to change when doing addition and multiplication since the rules are the same.

  • The hundreds are brought down and counted and labelled as before.
  • When all the beads are counted and all the corresponding quantities in number cards have been placed below them, the cards are then overlapped.
  • The large overlapped cards are then placed below the small number cards, which have remained on the right hand side of the mat.
  • The Montessori Directress then explains to the children that this time we added up three numbers that were exactly the same quantity. When we add three numbers that are the same, then we are multiplying the number three times. This is called multiplication.
  • Re-state the operation saying, “each child collected 1141 beads and we added all three numbers (or we can say we multiplied it three times) and now we have a larger number, 1423.
  • Remind the child how we changed the tens when we had more than 10 tens.

  • She reminds the children that we can exchange the 1000 bead cube for ten 100-bead squares making twelve 100 bead squares.
  • The 100 bead squares are then shared, as well as the 10 bead bars and finally the one-unit bead.
  • However, the unit can not be given to one child and not another, so we call this the remainder and that this is still part of the answer. A small number card is placed below it.
  • The Montessori Directress asks each child to collect and place the corresponding small number cards below the beads on their trays.
  • The children discover that they each have the same numbers.
  • The answer to their sum is therefore 411 remainder 1.
  • The Montessori Directress explains that the answer is what we see on each child’s tray and each child received 411 but that we only need to write it once, so 411 is the answer.
  • The Montessori Directress restates the sum, emphasising the point that we started with a large amount and we shared the beads evenly amongst the children and we call this “dividing”.

  • The ten units are then exchanged for one ten bead bar, which is brought to the mat and placed above the ten bead bars of the first number

  • The Montessori Directress then recaps, saying “We started with 236 beads and added 125 and now we have a larger number, 361.
  • Always restate the sum, pointing out to the children that two numbers were added together to make one large number. This is reflected in the size of the cards and the quantities of the beads.

    1. Begin the work cycle. This is a group exercise.
    2. One child is put in charge of the bank.
    3. Give each child in the group a felt – lined tray.
    4. The Montessori Directress makes up the dividend, such as 3663 with the large number cards and places it on the bottom right hand corner of the child’s tray.
    5. The child goes to the bank and collects the corresponding amount of beads.
    6. The Montessori Directress then shows the child how to lay out his beads on the top left hand side of the mat and the cards to the right of that.
    7. The Montessori Directress then tells the three children with trays that we are going to share the beads evenly amongst them and that each child will receive the same amount of beads.
    8. The Montessori Directress starts sharing or dividing the number starting with the thousands this time.
    9. The Montessori Directress gives each child a 1000 cube, then two 100 bead squares, then two 10 bead bars, and finally one unit bead each.
    10. The Montessori Directress asks each child to collect and place the corresponding small number cards below the beads on their trays.

    1. This is an individual exercise done at the table. This is a sensorial exploration of the shapes. Lay a mat on the table and place the solids on it. Select three solids, preferably one from each family. That is, one curved solid, one plane solid and one plane/curved solid.
    2. Pick up the solid, feel it and pass it on to the child to feel. Experiment with the solids. See which ones roll and which ones do not roll. Place the curved solid in the base, indirectly drawing the child’s attention as to which are curved and which are angular.

    Presentation 2

    1. Take out all the bases and place them on the mat. Take out all the solids and place them correctly on their bases. When all are correctly placed, select a square base and see how many solids will fit correctly on it. Try placing a curved solid on it so that the child will see the difference.

    Presentation 3

    1. The names of the different solids are introduced by the Three Period Lesson. The child should already know a cube from working with the Pink Tower, a prism from working with the Broad Stair, and a cylinder from the Knobless Cylinders. To begin with start with a shape they can already name.

    The thermometer is used to prepare the bottles, with the bottles being marked to show the variation so that the temperatures can be checked

    The six, paired Smelling bottles, contain a different smelling essence, e.g. teatree, lavender water, etc.
    OBJECTIVES:

    To develop a sensorial awareness of smell.

    CONTROL OF ERROR:

    The bottom of the bottles can be coded-coded to provide a control of error. The inside of the lids are coloured in a similar way to prevent the wrong lids being replaced on the wrong bottles and so mixing up the smells.

  • Ask the child to take a ten-bead bar from the box and place it on the mat, left of the top ten on the board.
  • Point to the twenty and ask the child what that is, affirm when he says it is twenty, and ask him to put twenty beads (that is two tens) next to the board on the left-hand side.
  • He makes thirty in the same way.
  • In other words, he identifies the symbol, counts out the appropriate amount of beads and places them in the correct place.
  • He does this for all the numbers up to 90.
  • End the work cycle.

  • Leave the card in place and continue with 12.
  • Point to the next number 10 on the board and ask the child if he remembers what that number is.
  • The child should respond with, “ten” in which case you continue the lesson.
  • Show the child how to take the loose “two” number card and how to slide it into the right hand side of the board covering the 0 so that the number now formed is 12 which is directly below the 11.
  • Remind the child that when we added two to the ten (as we did with the beads) we make a new number called twelve. This is how we would write 12.
  • Repeat this with 13.
  • In the SECOND PERIOD repeatedly ask the child to show you the various amounts 11, 12 and 13.
  • In the THIRD PERIOD, try to isolate each amount by covering each top number formed with a small piece of felt. Asking the child (in order) “what number is this?”
  • Consolidate by asking the child again to tell you the name of all three numbers.
  • The next time you work with this, do one known and two unknown numbers.
  • End the work cycle.

    Provide further practice in counting and associating the correct number of object with the numerals.

    See if the child can place the numeral in the correct order.

    Introduce child to the idea of odd and even numbers.

    Indirect preparation for divisibility of numbers.
    CONTROL OF ERROR:

    There is no control of error in the cards, but the pattern will show the numbers getting bigger and also there are exactly the right numbers of counters – 55.

  • Directress then invites the child to count and place the appropriate numbers of counters under the numeral cards.

    OBJECTIVES:

    To teach the child about addition in the concrete form.
    CONTROL OF ERROR:

  • One child brings down the units from the top of the mat, places them all together, and counts them.
  • The child collects and places the corresponding large number cards below the beads.
  • The second child brings down the tens, counts them and places the corresponding number cards below them.
  • The hundreds and thousands are brought down and counted and labelled as before.
  • When all the beads are counted and all the corresponding quantities in number cards have been places below them, the cards are then overlapped.
  • The large overlapped cards are then placed below the small number cards, which have remained on the right hand side of the mat.
  • The Montessori Directress then recaps, saying “We started with 1431 beads and added 1232 and now we have a larger number, 2663.”
  • Always restate the sum, pointing out to the children that two numbers were added together to make one large number. This is reflected in the size of the cards.
  • End the work cycle.

    1. When the infant is facing you place the Work Mat between you and the child and place the basket on the Mat.

    3. Show the object to the child by holding it in their natural line of vision and pause momentarily when you have the child’s attention, then clearly articulate the name of the object to the child in a normal fashion
